traveling for the holidays with your dog 12-19

If you are traveling during the holidays, you may want to take your dog with you. Here are some tips on how to travel with your dog:

  1. Before You Travel:
  • Check with your vet that your dog is healthy enough to travel.
  • Check with the airline about approved carriers and rules of travel based on the size of your dog.
  • Get your dog microchipped.
  • Make sure your dog is caught up on all necessary vaccinations.
  • Make copies of all of your dog’s medical records and relevant documents.
  1. What to Pack:
  • Copies of medical records and relevant documents. Keep a copy with you and attach a copy to your pet’s travel crate.
  • First aid kit
  • Food
  • Poop bags
  • Collar and leash
  • Travel crate
  • Collapsible food and water bowls
  • Calming tablets or anti-stress meds (talk to your vet before using these on your pet)
  • Bedding
  • Toys
  • Treats
  1. When You Arrive:
  • Keep your dog at the front entrance and check out the vacation home alone.
  • Make sure the home has a familiar scent by walking around and even spraying your perfume or cologne lightly around the home.
  • Check around the home to get rid of anything chewable at your dog’s height. Bring out their usual chew toys to get them feeling at home.
  • Take your dog for a long walk and give them a few treats to reward them for being such a great traveller!
