5 Tips For Keeping Your Dog Safe On Halloween Oct 2021

Keeping Halloween Treats & Candy From Your Pup

Unlike our love for Halloween candy, these sought-after treats are toxic to dogs. Sometimes, candy can be deadly. Unlike our cats, who are picky eaters, most dogs will eat anything. The treats and items below are especially dangerous to your pup.

  1. Chocolate
  2. Candies and Gum
  3. Hard candies
  4. Raisins
  5. Candy Wrappers

Be Aware of Door Dashing

If your dog runs outside of the house at inopportune times, and you plan on staying in and handing out candy to the trick-or-treaters. Be sure to leave your dog safely in the other room as the groups flood your door looking for candy.

Get Your Dog Comfortable With Their Costume Before You Hit the Streets

Many of us plan our furry friends’ Halloween costumes months in advance. To ensure a fun night, you want to use what’s called “desensitization”. Put one piece of their costume on at a time, then reward them with a treat. By the time Halloween rolls around, they will be eager to strap on their outfit and hit the neighborhood.

Be extra cautious with leash safety

If your pup is going house to house with your party, follow these safety tips:

  • Invest in reflective gear. Since it’s going to be rather dark outside, it’s important for you and others around you that a dog is easily visible while you go about your night.
  • Don’t bring your dog up to the door. With all the commotion that comes along with trick-or-treating, it’s best to keep a respectful distance away from the gate. Plus, the person answering the door may have allergies.
  • Be polite on the sidewalk!

Have fun, but stay focused

Be aware of your dog’s needs and check on them frequently. Take them out for potty breaks, bring lots of water, and take a rest. Don’t get so distracted by the fun that you forget to take care of your pup.
