Tips & Tricks For Traveling With Your Cat March 2022

Are you planning a road trip this spring? Today, road tripping with your cat is not only an option, but it can also be a great experience for you and your cat! Cats are lively travel companions, but only if we take the time to create a positive experience for them.

Here are some tips that can help you and your cat to have the best, safest, and most fun road trip together!

Get Your Cat Familiar With The Car Prior To Leaving

Start by taking your kitty out to the car before you plan to leave. Begin with taking them to get gas, a quick trip to the grocery store, or even just a ride around the block. This way, your cat will feel safe and familiar with her surroundings throughout the duration of the trip.

Cat Carrier

Carriers provide a safe, quiet space for your cat and will help relieve at least some of the anxiety they may feel. Preferably, they should be in their carrier as much as possible. Especially when you get out of your vehicle to take a picture or grab something to eat. Spend some time training your cat to love its carrier before the big travel day arrives. This could mean having their carrier inside the house so they can feel ultra-comfortable with their unused space.

Bring The Proper Gear

Road tripping with your cats means you’ll need to pack some additional items. Consider traveling with a small compact litter box with a scooper and a disposable bag. It will make your trip a lot easier. Other more obvious items you should bring along are treats, food, water, a blanket, and their favorite toy. As for the less common materials, many cat travelers suggest carrying an abundance of pet wipes, nail clippers, and your pet’s proof of vaccination.

Mealtime Only In The Car

Make your cat’s mealtime car time. Once your kitty’s calm in the car, feed all his meals in the car or offer high-value treats. Train her that only good things happen in the car. Plus, a nap is surely to follow. One good idea is to feed your cat in the car the week leading up to your trip. This will allow her not only to be comfortable in the car but also to crave the backseat!

Keep It Cool

Have cold water readily available, and make sure you have functional air conditioning in the back seat. If you’re stepping out of the car without your cat, crack the windows about an inch. Beware of rolling down windows farther; cats are wonderful at wiggling out of tight spaces.
